Programme Summary
AI data stewardship is the subject of this five-day training course for data owners, privacy and compliance leaders and AI programme managers at managerial level, ending in an AI data stewardship plan for one AI system. AI systems depend on data that is often collected for other purposes, poorly documented and widely shared. The approach moves from ownership and data mapping, through quality, integrity and privacy controls, to oversight, and then to a worked plan. Mars Training Centre UK delivers this programme in AI data stewardship.
The Business Case
When nobody owns the data behind an AI system, quality problems, unlawful uses and unexplained results appear only after deployment. Organisations that assign owners, record where data came from and apply privacy controls early can answer questions from regulators, customers and boards with evidence instead of assumptions, and can stop an unsafe use before it spreads.
- Data Quality Defects in AI Inputs: Fall as fitness checks and lineage records apply before data is used for training.
- Privacy Exposure: Reduces as personal data is mapped and consent and purpose rules are enforced.
- Audit Readiness: Improves as owners, decisions and evidence are recorded for each AI system.
Principles and Evidence Base
- ISO/IEC 5259: Its data quality concepts for analytics and machine learning structure the quality and lineage work in Session 2.
- ISO/IEC 27701: Its privacy information management requirements guide the privacy controls built in Session 3.
- ISO/IEC 42001: Its AI management system requirements shape the ownership and oversight arrangements in Sessions 1 and 4.
Intended Participants
- Data owners who are accountable for datasets used to train or run AI systems.
- Privacy and compliance leaders who review AI use of personal data.
- AI programme managers who approve data sources and suppliers.
- Information governance leads who set retention, sharing and access rules.
The programme serves banking, healthcare, telecommunications and public-sector organisations.
Learning Outcomes
- Participants will be able to map the data that trains, feeds and is produced by an AI system.
- Participants will be able to assign data owner and steward responsibilities for AI data.
- Participants will be able to evaluate training data for quality, representativeness and integrity.
- Participants will be able to diagnose privacy risks across the AI life cycle.
- Participants will be able to prioritise controls for consent, minimisation, retention and sharing.
- Participants will be able to justify an AI data stewardship plan to a system owner and a privacy lead.
Programme Structure
Day 1: AI Data Stewardship Foundations
Which data does an AI system use, who owns it, and what rules apply?
- AI Data Inventory and Flow Map
- Data Owner and Steward Role Charter
- ISO/IEC 42001 Data Requirements for AI Systems
- Purpose and Lawful Use Register
- Case Review of Two Sector Data Failures
Day 2: Data Quality and Integrity for AI
How is the quality and integrity of training and input data established?
- ISO/IEC 5259 Data Quality Characteristics
- Training Data Fitness Checklist
- Bias and Representativeness Review
- Data Lineage and Provenance Record
- Integrity Controls Against Tampering and Poisoning
Day 3: Privacy Controls and Consent
How is personal data protected when AI systems collect, learn from and generate it?
- Personal Data Mapping Across the AI Life Cycle
- ISO/IEC 27701 Privacy Information Management Controls
- Consent and Purpose Limitation Rules
- Anonymisation and Minimisation Options
- Privacy Impact Assessment for AI Use Cases
Day 4: Governance Operating Model and Oversight
Who decides, reviews and reports on AI data in daily operations?
- Decision Rights and Escalation Matrix
- Data Sharing and Supplier Agreement Clauses
- Retention and Deletion Schedule
- Incident and Breach Response for AI Data
- Data Assurance Indicator Set
Day 5: Applying AI Data Stewardship to an AI System
Is the stewardship plan ready for the system owner and the privacy lead to approve?
- Applying the Session 1 Data Map to the Chosen AI System
- Testing the Session 2 Quality Checklist on Sample Data
- Checking Session 3 Privacy Controls Against the Use Case
- Applying the Session 4 Decision Rights to Open Issues
- Completing the AI Data Stewardship Plan
Methodology
The programme is built around structured exercises and case analysis. Participants work with an anonymised AI use case and sample datasets, record data flows, test quality and privacy controls, and assign owners in small teams, then defend their plan before a simulated review board. No programming is required.
- Suggested activity: Tracing the data flow of a sample recruitment screening tool.
- Suggested activity: Checking a sample training dataset against a fitness checklist.
- Suggested activity: Drafting consent and retention rules for a customer service assistant.
Capstone Output
Each participant completes an AI data stewardship plan for one AI system. It contains a data map, an owner and steward charter, a quality and lineage record, a privacy control set, a retention and sharing schedule and an indicator set. It is used to brief the system owner and privacy lead and to prepare for internal audit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AI data stewardship training suitable for privacy and compliance leaders without a technical background?
Yes. AI data stewardship training is set at managerial level and assumes experience of data, privacy or compliance responsibilities, not programming or machine learning.
Which standards does AI data stewardship rest on in this programme?
AI data stewardship rests on ISO/IEC 5259 for data quality, ISO/IEC 27701 for privacy information management and ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management systems.
How is the AI data stewardship plan used at work?
You use the AI data stewardship plan to brief the system owner and privacy lead, assign data responsibilities and prepare evidence for internal audit.
