Oil and Gas Project Management is a five-day senior project leadership course delivered by Mars Training Centre across its international network — in London, Dubai, Doha, Al Jubail, and Kuala Lumpur — designed for project directors, programme leads, and senior managers responsible for major capital projects in the petroleum and energy sectors.

Capital projects in oil, gas, and energy are among the largest, longest, and riskiest undertakings in modern industry. Even with decades of accumulated practice, the sector continues to overrun, underdeliver, or write down a meaningful share of its mega-projects. The reasons are well known — front-end definition, governance, contractor strategy, and execution discipline — yet senior project leaders rarely have the time to step back and refresh the frameworks that distinguish the projects that succeed from those that do not.

This programme offers that step back. Across five days you will work through the discipline of front-end loading, stage-gated governance, contractor strategy, cost and schedule control, and the leadership disciplines that determine whether a major project lands. Reference is made descriptively to widely recognised industry standards and FIDIC-family contracting frameworks, without claiming any third-party accreditation. The orientation is senior leadership, not project administration.

What You Will Learn

  • Apply stage-gated front-end loading frameworks to oil and gas projects.
  • Evaluate project definition quality before sanction.
  • Diagnose the principal root causes of major project overruns.
  • Analyse contractor strategy and contracting models for major projects.
  • Apply cost and schedule control discipline at senior level.
  • Evaluate risk management frameworks for major capital projects.
  • Lead a multi-disciplinary project leadership team through execution pressure.
  • Communicate project status honestly to boards, partners, and lenders.
  • Assess the project management implications of energy transition projects.
  • Build a personal leadership practice for major project directors.

How You Will Benefit

You will leave with a structured senior-level command of major project management in oil, gas, and energy, sharper questions for your project teams, and a clearer leadership practice for your next project — and a Mars Certificate of Completion.

Your organisation will gain a senior project leader who can stress-test major capital decisions, lead execution with more discipline, and reduce the probability of the cost, schedule, and reputation losses that periodically reshape capital-heavy businesses.

This programme is designed for senior leaders of major capital projects, including:

  • Project directors and senior project managers in oil, gas, and energy
